MAP Intelligence: Ethical Approaches to Competitive Pricing Monitoring

The Pricing Visibility Challenge

Brands and distributors need to know how their products are priced across the retail landscape. Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policies exist to protect brand value and dealer relationships — but monitoring compliance across dozens of retailers and thousands of SKUs is a significant operational challenge.

Manual approaches — spot-checking websites, relying on dealer reports, or assigning staff to periodic audits — are slow, incomplete, and expensive. By the time a MAP violation is discovered manually, it may have been live for days or weeks, undermining pricing discipline across the channel.

Ethical Data Collection Principles

Automated pricing monitoring raises legitimate questions about data collection practices. GuildBuild's MAP Intelligence platform is built on a foundation of ethical data collection:

  • Public data only — we collect prices that any consumer can see on a public product page. No login bypass, no account creation, no access to restricted areas.
  • Robots.txt compliance — we respect every retailer's robots.txt directives and Terms of Service. If a retailer signals that automated access is unwelcome, we honour that signal.
  • Rate-limited requests — our collection engine sends requests at a pace that does not impact retailer website performance. We behave like a polite visitor, not a load test.
  • No PII — we never collect personal information. No customer data, no account information, no cookies that identify individuals.
  • Full audit trail — every data point is traceable from source page to client dashboard, providing transparency and accountability.

From Data to Intelligence

Raw price data is only useful when it becomes actionable intelligence. The MAP Intelligence platform processes collected data through a Medallion Lakehouse pipeline (Bronze → Silver → Gold) with automated quality checks at every stage. Delta tables with full versioning ensure that historical pricing data is preserved and every change is tracked.

The intelligence layer detects price changes, identifies MAP violations, flags anomalies for human review, and generates trend analysis and forecasting. Clients receive prompt alerts when significant pricing events occur — up to 8 scan cycles per day, each completing within 90 minutes — giving them hours to respond rather than days.
